Jeremy Swayman
Grade: B-
Regardless of how you feel about his contract, Swayman clearly set himself back by missing training camp. His save percentage and goals-against-average are easy to point to because they were both the worse of his career, but they don’t tell the full story of his season. He clearly had some very rough games this season, but there were also some that he showed what we saw in the playoffs last season. It became clear that he would struggle in any game that was a third consecutive start, but he was still given the starts and many of them crushed his statistics. He will definitely learn a lot from this season and will be better long-term for this seasons struggles, but this season was not as bad as his numbers make it out to be.
Joonas Korpisalo
Grade: B+
On par with his counter-part, Korpisalo registered a quality start in exactly half of his starts this season. He had seven games in which he allowed 4 or more goals, but he also had eight games in which he allowed 1 goal or posted a shut out. There were a number of times he took the net during a multi-game slide for the team and he was able to help “stop the bleeding.” He only got 27 starts even though his play dictated that he should have gotten more – which is a decision that falls on the coaches. Overall, Korpisalo had a solid season and deserves credit for sure, but I do think he can build on it for next season.
Michael DiPietro
Grade: B+
This season DiPietro continued his trend of being better than Bussi and keeping himself as the starter. During Swayman’s contract standoff, many were clambering for Bussi to get the number two role in Boston, but it was clear that DiPietro would have been the better choice. He was much more consistent over the course of the season despite still giving up goals that he shouldn’t. He definitely earned himself a call up should Boston have suffered an injury in the crease, but they didn’t so he didn’t get one. Both of DiPietro and Bussi are unrestricted free agents this summer – DiPietro is the one you hope you can bring back if you have to decide between the two.
Brandon Bussi
Grade: C+
Eyes were on Bussi to fight for the number two role in Boston as camp started and the standoff with Swayman continued. In many peoples’ view he was the favorite to win the job, however, he had a very bad camp overall and struggled early on once he got to Providence. He lost starts to DiPietro this season and really seems to have taken a step back overall. His final numbers were fine, but the net clearly belonged to DiPietro as the team entered the playoffs. He played well once DiPietro left the series due to injury, and he should still see some minutes in the NHL at some point over his career. It still seems that he won’t ever reach a full-time starter role at the NHL level as he continues to fail to push for NHL time at this point.
